Sustainability in Cleaning: From Creation to Clean-Up
5 minute read

At ECOS, we believe true sustainability doesn’t begin with the bottle or end at the drain. It’s a commitment woven through every stage of a product’s life—from design and manufacturing to how it’s used and what happens after. Because reducing the environmental impact of cleaning starts with rethinking every step.
We know that genuine sustainability is more than a label—it’s a deep, ongoing responsibility. That’s why we consider the entire life cycle of every ECOS cleaning product, from ingredient sourcing and responsible manufacturing to daily use and eventual return to the environment.
As a pioneer in sustainable cleaning and the first brand in our industry to become Climate Positive across all our U.S. facilities, ECOS is committed to making every decision count. And we know consumers like you—who care about reducing your impact—deserve transparency and products that align with your values.
- Responsible Production Starts at the Source
Before our products ever hit the shelf, sustainability is already in motion. We formulate using carefully selected ingredients and prioritize suppliers who meet high ethical and environmental standards. Our U.S. manufacturing facilities are powered by 100% renewable energy and are Climate Positive—meaning we give back more than we use in energy, water, and carbon.

Thoughtful Sourcing with a Base of Plant-Derived Ingredients
It all starts with what goes into the bottle. We use coconut-based surfactants and several other plant-derived ingredients that deliver strong cleaning performance while reducing impact compared to petroleum-based or harsh chemical alternatives. Our team of scientists and environmental chemists carefully formulate each product to be effective and easy to rinse, without relying on ingredients that can be harmful or persistent in the environment.
- Hypoallergenic Enzyme Laundry Detergent: Tough on stains, gentle on fabric. This formula is made without fragrance and dye, and uses a coconut-derived cleaning agent to fight odors and break down stubborn stains.
Every ingredient is vetted through strict standards for performance and sustainability, and we work with partners who share our commitment to responsible practices.

Powered by 100% Renewable Energy & Trusted Certifications
Sustainability should be measurable. That’s why all ECOS facilities in California, Illinois, Washington, and New Jersey run on 100% renewable energy. We’ve earned top certifications including LEED Zero Carbon, LEED Zero Energy, and TRUE Platinum Zero Waste—proof of our efforts to cut waste, lower emissions, and optimize resources.
We’re proud to be the first U.S.-based cleaning product company to become Climate Positive—meaning we restore more resources than we consume in energy, water, and carbon.

Smart Product Design
Sustainability also means designing with purpose. We use recyclable packaging and have significantly reduced virgin plastic by offering concentrated formulas and bottles made from post-consumer recycled materials. This helps consumers reduce waste and lighten their footprint at home.
- Ultra-Concentrated Liquid Laundry Detergent: Our latest breakthrough. A lightweight, bottle packed with enzyme power. Just two pumps in cold water provide the perfect dose—enough for 78 loads. No measuring, no waste. We also innovate new formats to reduce plastic use and lighten the load—literally.
- ECOS Laundry Detergent Sheets: Compact, easy to carry, and packaged without plastic. These dissolve quickly and clean just as effectively as traditional liquid detergent—without the bulk or environmental burden.
-
Efficient Use at Home
Sustainability is also about how products are used. Our formulas work well in cold water, helping reduce energy use during laundry cycles. They’re designed to be gentler on people, pets, and aquatic ecosystems—without ingredients that linger in the environment or disrupt its natural balance.
We avoid ingredients that can persist or bioaccumulate, and our products are certified by third-party programs like U.S. EPA Safer Choice and Leaping Bunny, verifying compliance with rigorous standards for ingredient safety and cruelty-free practices.
A Lasting Commitment
At ECOS, sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s the way we do business. We not only make high-performing, responsible cleaning products, we also advocate for public policies that support ingredient transparency, equitable access to cleaner choices, and environmental justice.
We’ll keep innovating at every step—so that keeping your home clean also means taking care of the planet. Because choosing a cleaning product is also choosing the kind of future you want to create. And we believe cleaning should never come at a cost to the world around us.
Thank you for joining us on this journey.
